This extremely eclectic yet fairly Gothic style print is one of a kind. The symphony of geometric shapes with jagged edges bordering the rounded Crenel & Merlon style mossy green borders encompasses what seems like the main courtyard of design in the centre of the illustration. The natural style Cobalt blue leaves add relief to the boldness of the stronger shapes around it. The juxtaposition of the stylized foliage with strong lines is a true example of how the Greek influenced the Neo Byzantine era. A combination of illuminated borders from Greek Manuscripts the Greco ornamentation was never representative or meaningful but purely decorative. The dance of the reds greens deep purples and blues in this illustration almost seems to represent a maze or labyrinth surrounded by many hourglass and obstacles. A part of Owen Jones 19th century folio, this funky pattern is a great addition giving meaning to the shapes styles and colours in cohesion.
Sourced in Calcutta India, this original lithograph from 1856 has been altered with the addition of a playful yet contemporary chequered black and white border. Combined with a rich brown Soot coloured velvet fabric and a stunning grey-blue double fringe detail for a stark contrast this is LABYRINTHUS.
