Featuring an incredible combination of ‘the centre’ from St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice with two Greek illuminated borders from a piece of parchment this original 1856 illustration is a great mixture of fun prints and colours. Historic provenance aside the forms and geometric patterns add the perfect vibrancy to the stylized foliage we have noted throughout all the Byzantine & Romanesque period designs. The juxtaposition of all the patterns together only reiterate the many design periods that came to form what we today simply understand as Byzantine ornamentation with rich materials with sumptuous colour trappings. The abstractness of this print seems almost modern and collage-like with the combination of Greco-Roman Styles which is why she is named after the wife & empress of Justinian I the emperor responsible for helping the Byzantine art evolve and flourish. Known for her input in the life of her husband's political career as well as other avenues as his equal a revolutionary idea for the 6th century woman. Her modernity and assertiveness inspired the name of this cushion print. This is THEODORA.
Sourced from Calcutta India this colourful 1856 lithograph has maintained all the original colours and transferred beautifully onto a luxurious beige poly velvet front and subtly balanced with a beautiful golden-clay coloured velvet back & matching twisted rope fringe. Modern, playful yet subtle this print is extremely versatile for any space.
