A piece of Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt’s Geometrical Mosaics of the Middle Ages (1848) this print was inspired by Palermo’s 12th century cathedral in Monreale Sicily in combination with an ancient Greek Illuminated Manuscript.
Created by Arab and Byzantine artists in the middle ages this mosaic like design is a likeness to the Flower of Life symbol in an all over repeat pattern and harks to Owen Jones pioneering layering method of multi-colour prints i.e. Chromolithography.
Sourced from Calcutta India this original 1856 plate or lithograph transferred onto a Poly Velvet material is the MONREALE cushion print finished with a rich Mauve colour velvet backing and soft cotton piping.
