Combining an organic curved & intertwined vine like design this circular three colour pattern originating from the St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice seems almost opposite to the opulence of the Byzantine era ornamentation. However created somewhere between the 10th and 11th century with a mix of Romanesque & Gothic design the thin red & green continuous foliage on a brownish background without a budding flower characterises Byzantine ornamentation perfectly. This design appears to be mimicking the central dome of the cathedral with the smaller half domes alluding to the four points of a cruciform. Named after the old name of Venice La Serenissima, this is the ISSIMA print.
Sourced from Calcutta India this original 1856 print is transferred onto a poly velvet material on the front & is backed by a light cedar colour & is completed with a sage green twisted rope fringe all around to add to the organic tones of the cushion.
