A combination of two different prints, this Cobalt blue design showcases a fairly common decorative style made popular during the 12th &13th centuries Decorative Surrounds also known as Borders. Occupying intercolumnar space in illuminated manuscripts these intricate pieces of art were created along with texts on parchment by monks in monasteries would depict sprouting plant-like forms foliate bar borders among various other design styles. This particular pattern reads as roots growing underground and vines spreading above ground almost creating movement thus leading to the name of this print BION in ancient Greek meaning life. This attractive combination of an almost earthy red on the deep olive green background also references the colour palette used during the Byzantine period where the colour red symbolised life which is also depicted in these budding florals reiterating the depiction of growth in this 1856 illustration.
Sourced in Calcutta India & printed a soft plush poly velvet with a stunning amber colour Velvet on the opposite side BION can elevate any room in your home.
